The Project
After 12 years in the EFL’s League One, one of English Football’s most historic clubs, Portsmouth, were promoted to the Sky Bet Championship. Along with a new league, ‘Pompey’ wanted to expand their live output, and reached out to several production companies with the goal of launching a live matchday show for its fiercely loyal fanbase.
Optical Media were chosen to design & deliver Pompey+ a modern, engaging pre-match programme with the club and its fans at its heart, all at a cost that offers value to the club.
From shaping the creative vision in the early production stages to installing a permanent studio and production space at the club, we have led on every aspect of the project, advising the club on best practices technically and editorially. Our experienced team now works on-site every matchday to deliver a professional and engaging show for viewers across the globe.
A dedicated producer leads the project, ensuring consistency and familiarity for the pundits and client. Each programme - up to an hour in length- includes a wide variety of topics and features, including video packages, analysis and statistics, interviews with guests from across the Pompey community, video calls with fans, pitch side perspectives and giveaways- all researched and managed by us.
Technical innovation
It was a complex task building a fully bespoke 3 camera TV studio inside Fratton Park, complete with integrated fibre lines, a dedicated comms system, and audio setup tailored to the space.
To bring our creative vision to life, we also had to develop a brand new graphics workflow from scratch one that could seamlessly integrate with our production environment and handle live football data in real time.
We engineered a custom system that empowered our compact on-site team to deliver an extensive suite of live stats, player data, match insights, and historical context - all instantly accessible to presenters and crew.
We also built software to connect our production hardware with a cloud-based running order system, allowing us to automate key elements and achieve broadcast quality results with a smaller team and resources.
